WASHINGTON, Ill. – Washington’s Good Neighbor Days gets underway this week. But an event part of the festival for children with disabilities will not be part of it.
25 News reports festival organizers are re-evaluating safety of Special Kids Day after an incident at an unnamed festival last year.
Special Kids Day provided a private and inclusive environment for individuals with disabilities to enjoy the rides and festivities.
The Washington Chamber of Commerce declined to comment on the cancellation of the event.
Amy Gayle is a parent of a child with autism and founder of an organization to support those with disabilities. She says it’s an event that many people look forward to, and took her son there when he was growing up.
Gayle says she does not want to see the cancellation become a trend that ends up discriminating against a group of people she says it already discriminated against. She’s hoping to work with local organizations for safer and more inclusive options in the future.
