SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A Chillicothe police officer has been honored by the state for his action in
Officer David Buchanan was given the 2024 Illinois Law Enforcement Medal of Honor. He was among 23 officers from 10 different departments to receive the honor.
Buchanan was the officer who pulled over a reported stolen vehicle at Finney and Matthews Streets February 13th last year.
During the stop, 50-year-old Marvin Martin III opened fire and hit Buchanan in the chest and hand, but Buchanan returned fire and shot Martin.
Martin later died at a hospital. The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office ruled the shooting justified in June.
