WASHINGTON, Ill. – The City of Washington has hired a new police chief after city officials on Monday night allowed for the chief to reside outside of city limits.
The Washington City Council unanimously approved a four-year contract with interim Chief Jeff Stevens. He replaces Chief Mike McCoy.
Stevens will make an annual salary of $140,000, but could receive pay raises based on yearly performance reviews.
His official hiring was possible after the council agreed to change a long-standing ordinance requiring the police chief to live in the city.
Now, a chief employed by the City of Washington for at least 15 years is permitted to live within 25 miles of the city.
Stevens has been on the police force for more than 20 years.
