WASHINGTON, Ill. – The foundation behind a proposed amphitheater for Washington is pulling support for it.
Attorneys for the Hengst Foundation, the organization behind the 5,000 seat, $12 million project, sent a letter last week to the city. The letter indicates the foundation is pulling out of the project because the city “has not accepted or executed the Letter of Intent and has not delivered any acceptance to the Foundation.”
The letter will be discussed at Monday night’s Committee of the Whole meeting in front of aldermen and city leaders.
A Letter of Intent from the Hengst Foundation in April outlined what it requested from the organization and the city, in the hopes of getting approval from the council.
Last month, with a new council and mayor in place, the intention was to seek more answers about details of the project, as well as determine in a goal setting session if the amphitheater was something the council wanted moving forward.
Interim City Administrator Dennis Carr says council was hopeful Hengst would wait until the goal setting session, with the results expected to come in September.
“It appears that that timeline didn’t necessarily match with what the Hengst Foundation was looking for,” Carr said.
Carr says questionnaires relating to the goal setting session were expected to be mailed out over the next couple months.
Carr says there is potential the project could be revived in the future.
