PEORIA, Ill. – The Peoria Park District is celebrating a decade of play at Glen Oak Park.
The district this week is celebrating 10 years since the opening of the Peoria PlayHouse children’s museum.
Park District Executive Director Emily Cahill recalls the concept of the PlayHouse being discussed with the Junior League as far back as 2002. She says the PlayHouse has welcomed close to a million people since its doors were first opened in 2015.
“Considering COVID and its impact, and the way that Melissa Sierra has led the building to continue to evolve, to be what it needs to be, to meet the needs of our patrons, I’m just so proud of this place,” Cahill said.
Cahill says as part of the 10-year celebration, the PlayHouse will be getting some needed renovations. She says some of the improvements include a renovation of the Real Tools area and glassing in the backside porch.
Cahill says renovations are expected to cost at least $750,000, with work scheduled to start in the fall or winter.
An open house at the PlayHouse is scheduled for Saturday for everyone to come and celebrate the building’s birthday.
