MORTON, Ill. – West Nile virus has now been found in Tazewell County.
The Tazewell County Health Department says a mosquito pool collected in Morton on Tuesday tested positive for the virus the next day.
The county says even though the pool was collected in Morton, it’s asking people in surrounding areas to take precautions, because mosquitos can travel up to two miles.
Peoria County earlier this week reported that the virus was found in the county for the first time this year.
The health department says about 8 out of 10 people who are infected with the virus do not experience symptoms. Those that do experience them can suffer from a slight fever or headache, with more severe symptoms including disorientation, convulsions, and even death.
To prevent the spread of the virus, the health department is asking people to eliminate instances of standing water, and use an insect repellant that includes DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.
