PEORIA, Ill. – Chants filled the air Sunday as protesters gathered near Bradley University to oppose the Trump Administration’s policy of mass deportations.
Peoria No Ban No Wall and River City Rainbow Collective were among several local groups hosting a peaceful rally after widespread deportations in Los Angeles, a day after “No Kings” protesters marched across the U.S., including in Bloomington and Chicago.
On Sunday, protesters took to the streets near Main and University to vocalize their frustrations with the administration and voiced their support for immigrants’ rights.
Sage Peterson, one of the lead organizers of Sunday’s protest, told 25 News, this is a fight for human rights.
“It’s sickening and sad, the fact that we have ICE agents not having any identification, not serving any warrants, just unmarked, unbadged people getting put into vans. That should scare everyone,” Peterson said.
Since President Trump took office, he has targeted over 10 million unauthorized migrants living in the United States.
According to data from the ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection as of June 5 of this year, around 51,000 migrants have been held in ICE detention facilities.
