PEORIA, Ill. – A teenager accused of killing an elderly man at a Peoria tow yard last week has been ordered to stay in jail until his trial, but his co-defendant will be released.
The crime happened in broad daylight, in the middle of the afternoon.
Peoria Police obtained surveillance video showing 18-year-old Terrance Shaw was driving a stolen car, and 16-year-old Jaylin Polnitz was in the passenger seat when they tried to steal it from Billie Jo’s Towing on Monday, June 9.
Peoria County State’s Attorney Jodi Hoos said in a statement that an employee saw Shaw and Polnitz trying to get away, and started to close the gate.
Shaw and Polnitz sped through the gate, causing it to swing open and hit the employee and killing 70-year-old William Collier. The other man suffered minor injuries.
In court Monday, the judge said Shaw had a lengthy criminal history, but Polnitz had no criminal record.
Conditions of Polnitz’ release requires him to wear a GPS ankle bracelet and comply with a curfew in which he can’t leave home between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m. Polnitz can only leave the house with a guardian, and he can’t make contact with anyone involved in the incident.
Shaw and Polnitz are both scheduled to be in court again on July 10.
