PEKIN, Ill. – The Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run will be making its way through Pekin Friday morning.
The Torch Run, which supports the Special Olympics, got its start in Illinois back in 1986, with just 100 runners. Today, officers from all over the state lace up their shoes and take part.
Lt. Justin Rabe, with Pekin Police, says the Torch Run is as much about awareness, as it is about raising money.
“We sell the t-shirts…so you can get the LETR, Law Enforcement Torch Run t-shirts. We sell them year-long. You can just do straight donations with us. And, we do fundraising events throughout the year,” Rabe says.
Pekin Police will start their leg of the Torch Run Friday at 8 a.m. The public is encouraged to come out and show their support.
“We’ll be carrying the torch through Pekin…we’ll start on Parkway, and we’ll run the torch all the way down Parkway to Court Street, and then Court Street all the way down to the Hobby Lobby parking lot,” Rabe says.
Law enforcement from all corners of the state will be running to benefit Special Olympics of Illinois. To date, officers have raised $58 million.
The Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run leads up to the Special Olympics Summer Games which are being held in Normal.
