PEORIA, Ill. – Clear bookbags will now be the standard for Peoria Public Schools middle and high school students.
The school board approved requiring clear bags at its meeting this Tuesday afternoon, citing school safety concerns.
Board President Paris McConnell says the usage of the clear backpacks is a sign of the times.
“We utilize clear backpacks in every public venue; Civic Center, NFL, even at the Peoria Chiefs game,” McConnell said. “As so, I don’t think it’s exposing people’s privacy as much as it is for a safety factor.”
The policy would allow for exceptions to students who carry medically-necessary items.
Before the discussion and vote, one parent spoke at public comment against the clear bag policy. Her concerns centered on exposing feminine hygiene products and similar items in the open.
Superintendent Dr. Sharon Desmoulin-Kherat says the district purchased around 2,000 clear backpacks for around $40,000 to help assist families if needed. She says the bags would be available for purchase for around $20, but noted they could be found cheaper at a retail store or Amazon.
Desmoulin-Kherat also said that local organizations are helping out by investing in the clear backpacks, and are planning to give some out at back-to-school events. The district could also work with parents who need one at a reduced price.
The board also discussed delaying the implementation of requiring the clear backpacks until October, to go in line with when vaccination requirements would need to be completed.
