PEORIA, Ill. – Free parking is not just in the game of Monopoly, it’s also in downtown Peoria.
Starting Monday, Peoria is upgrading its parking system that will include new smart meter heads. During the transition this week, payment collection is being waived at meters.
In a statement, the city says only a portion of the meters will be replaced, but all parking meters citywide will switch to a new system.
The new system will allow people to pay for metered parking with coins, credit or debit cards, and contactless payments such as Apple and Google Pay. For people using text to pay, they will receive a reminder 10 minutes before the timer runs out.
