PEORIA, Ill. – Five people accused of impeding police assisting a gunshot victim early Sunday morning in downtown Peoria were ordered to remain in jail.
25 News reports police body camera footage from eight officers were shown at a detention hearing on Tuesday, showing multiple altercations between bystanders and police, as the victim lay on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest.
The five, each charged with Aggravated Battery, are 32–year-old Wesley Collins, 29-year-old Larenshia Harris-Moore, 28-year-old Ariann Jackson, 32-year-old Barry Anderson, and 38-year-old Trennel Carter. Collins is also charged with allegedly trying to disarm a police officer, while Anderson was also charged for allegedly breaking the handle of a police car.
Charges against 25-year-old Jazzie Alston were dismissed.
Prosecutors say several of the videos showed Collins and Anderson pushing the officers, while three of the other suspects are reportedly shown interfering and becoming violent. Harris-Moore is allegedly shown to hold an officer by her hair or neck.
Defense attorneys noted that some of the defendants were the sole caretakers of their children in asking for their release.
At the hearing, Associate Judge Mark Gilles stated the defendants appear to make the incident about themselves, and called the footage and actions “disturbing, deplorable, and sad.”
