PEORIA, Ill. (25 News) – Fewer people were in the courtroom Thursday as the fourth day of the trial of Sean Grayson, a former Sangamon County sheriff’s deputy, began.
The ex-deputy is charged with three counts of first-degree murder for allegedly shooting and killing Sonya Massey in her Springfield home on July 6, last year.
25 News reports a fifth witness on the list, Illinois State Police Crime Scene Technician Adam Markwell, described and confirmed three shell casings that were shown in the courtroom, along with the medical kit were used at the scene.
Markwell said he returned to the scene two days after the shooting to collect a third shell casing after viewing body camera footage and realizing there were three shots fired.
He also said he attended Massey’s autopsy to collect clothing, fingerprints and a post-mortum kit.
During cross examination by the defense, Markwell said he took a picture of Grayson after the alleged shooting for the investigation, and confirmed that Grayson’s body camera was located on his chest.
The sixth witness to take the stand was another State Police Crime Scene investigator, Emily Maulding.
She collected and processed evidence along with photographing autopsy evidence. A picture of a robe covered in blood was shown to the court. Maulding also collected further evidence on July 23, 2024 at the home.
