WASHINGTON, D.C. – Central Illinois Congressmen are reacting to their votes to force the release of files connected to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The U.S. House passed a measure by a 427-1 vote to force the release of all unclassified records to the Senate for consideration. Democrats and some Republicans have been pushing for the release of the files for several weeks.
Both 16th District Congressman Darin LaHood (R-Dunlap) and 17th District Congressman Eric Sorensen (D-Moline) voted “yes” on the measure, and both took to X after the vote for statements.
Sorensen posted his statement in a video, and says he voted “yes” because it’s “time to believe the victims.”
“It is time for justice for the victims,” Sorensen said. “It is time for an end of the protection that these evil-doers have after they preyed on children.”
Sorensen says he is hopeful the Senate has a speedy vote on the matter. He also vowed to “not stand down” if President Trump were to “throw up the red tape and the bureaucracy to protect himself and his friends.”
LaHood says he will continue to support the Oversight Committee’s efforts to release any remaining documents related to Epstein.
“As investigations continue, we must remain focused on delivering justice for the victims,” LaHood said. “Anyone who participated in these crimes or aided Epstein must be held fully accountable and be criminally charged under the full extent of the law.”
