MORTON, Ill. (25 News) – A fire at a Morton bakery Sunday evening caused an estimated $100,000 in damage, but the business plans to fulfill Thanksgiving orders despite the setback.
25 News reports a passerby called the Morton Fire Department around 5:15 p.m. after seeing smoke inside Great Harvest Bread Co. in the 600 block of West Jackson Street.
The business was closed at the time, and no injuries were reported.
Morton Fire Chief Justin Hale said firefighters extinguished the blaze in about 15 minutes. East Peoria and Washington fire departments assisted Morton crews.
Jackson Street was temporarily closed while firefighters worked at the scene.
Chief Hale said the fire does not appear to have been intentionally set. The State Fire Marshal’s Office has been called to investigate the cause.
In a Facebook post Sunday night, Great Harvest said the fire started in the lobby and was caused by an electrical problem. The business will be closed temporarily.
“Earlier this evening we had a fire in our lobby break out. No one was hurt and the cause has not been confirmed, outside of it being electrical,” the business posted.
Despite the damage, the staff is determined to fulfill all Thanksgiving week orders.
“However, it is Thanksgiving week, and our amazing staff is determined to fulfill all of our orders for our customers,” the post stated.
The business said it will likely set up a pop-up table and tent where customers can pick up their orders in a smaller window of time.
“We were able to save most of the order slips, so we will be contacting you,” the post said.
