PEORIA, Ill. – It’s a busy week for everyone at Peoria’s South Side Mission.
On Monday, the prep work begins for their 54th annual Thanksgiving Meal Ministry.
“We’re going to take out about 2,600 meals across the community. So, of course we have to prepare them. We’re starting with cranberries and rolls today (Monday), we have a couple of groups coming in to do that,” South Side Mission’s Rich Draeger said.
On Tuesday, they’ll prep green beans, potatoes and fixings. The meals are assembled and packaged on Wednesday, then delivered by volunteers on Thanksgiving.
South Side Mission also hosts a sit down meal on Thursday that’s open to the public.
“In the morning, we’ll do all the deliveries. And, then about 10 to 10:30 that wraps up, and then we reset the gym…setting it up for a sit down meal. We’ve been averaging anywhere from 130 and 160, and we’re expecting we’ll have a few more, so we’re budgeting for around 200,” Draeger said.
The Thanksgiving Day meal is open to the public. South Side Mission is located at 1127 S. Laramie Street in South Peoria.
