PEORIA, Ill. – The Peoria Fire Department is celebrating a significant safety milestone.
The department was honored Tuesday morning by the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance for installing 1,000 free smoke detectors across the city. Peoria is the 5th city in the state of Illinois that has reached the mark within the past two years.
The Peoria Fire Department began the program in 2018. The fire department says since the program began, there’s been decreases in fire injuries and fire deaths.
Division Chief of Prevention Nate Rice, who took over the program in 2021, says numerous people are kept safe in Peoria through their efforts.
“The fact is that we know that we’ve put them in over 800 residences, and so that’s 800 more residences that have working smoke alarms that can safely get out of their homes if they ever have a fire,” Rice said.
Rice says anyone in Peoria who is a homeowner is eligible to receive a smoke detector at no cost, and can sign up on the city’s website.
