PEORIA, Ill. – Three juvenile males are facing charges after a carjacking and attempted carjacking in North Peoria over the weekend.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says that two 14-year-olds were charged Tuesday with aggravated vehicular hijacking, vehicular hijacking, and unlawful possession of a stolen motor vehicle. A 15-year-old male was charged with unlawful possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
During their detention hearing, the state’s request for detention was granted, and all three will remain in custody at the Peoria County Juvenile Detention Center.
On December 6 around 8 A.M., the owner of a GMC Sierra reported to police that his truck was no longer in his driveway.
Police used OnStar to track and stop the vehicle on North Knoxville Avenue near the CEFCU bank. Five juvenile males jumped from the truck and ran in different directions.
Police saw two of the males, both 14 years old, run into the bank parking lot toward a Hyundai Genesis parked at the ATM. The first 14-year-old pulled a gun and pointed it at the driver of that vehicle, while the second 14-year-old tried to pull the driver out.
As officers approached, they ordered the first 14-year-old to drop his weapon. He threw the gun into the grass and ran into the bank to hide, where he was arrested.
The second 14-year-old got into the Hyundai, sat on top of the driver, and tried to drive off while officers tried to remove him. In the process of trying to get away, he hit a pillar by the ATM, collided with the bank, and eventually crashed into a concrete lamppost. He then tried to run but was taken to the ground and detained.
The 15-year-old was detained after officers found him running nearby.
Prosecutors have filed motions to transfer both 14-year-olds to adult felony court and to revoke the 15-year-old’s probation.
Police are still working to locate the remaining two juveniles who fled from the stolen truck.
