PEKIN, Ill. (25 News) – Kratom is no longer allowed in Pekin after the city council Monday night voted to ban its sale.
Places where kratom is sold, such as gas stations or smoke shops, received a letter from the city on Tuesday explaining the ban. Businesses will have 10 days from when they receive the letter to remove kratom from their shelves.
Pekin city leaders tell 25 News that after the deadline, they will make sure every place is compliant with the ban.
The FDA warns against the use of kratom, saying risks include addiction, liver problems, and even seizures.
Kratom is already banned statewide for people under the age of 18.
Morton, Bloomington, Creve Coeur, and East Peoria have also taken steps to ban the substance as well.
