GROVELAND, Ill. – Sunday’s severe weather spawned a tornado in rural Tazewell County.
The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado touched down in rural Groveland, along Allentown Road about three miles east of Pekin High School, at 9:27 A.M. The twister traveled for about 1.75 miles before lifting.
Meteorologists say the tornado destroyed two outbuildings and snapped numerous trees along Allentown Road, and snapped about eight power poles along Springfield Road. The tornado also caused minor roof damage along Springfield Road.
The Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office says, as of Monday morning, Springfield Road is closed between Illinois Route 9 and Broadway in rural Pekin.
Wind damage was also reported on Sunday in Pekin and Morton, with one inch hail reported in Congerville in Woodford County. The Peoria International Airport reported wind gusts Sunday night as high as 49 MPH.
