PEORIA COUNTY, Ill. – The cause of a trailer fire Wednesday afternoon in rural Chillicothe that left an infant dead is under investigation.
Peoria County Sheriff Chris Watkins says deputies responded to the fire at Pinewood Estates on Rome Road, just after 2:30 P.M. Deputies attempted to enter the trailer, but were unable due to heavy smoke and fire conditions.
The mother told deputies that her child was still inside the trailer and unable to reach her. The eight-month-old infant was later found deceased inside the trailer by fire personnel.
Watkins says the mother was treated at a local hospital for smoke-inhalation injuries, while two juveniles were also taken to a local hospital.
He says a deputy was taken to a local hospital as well after suffering a cut to his wrist attempting to force entry into the trailer.
Chillicothe Fire responded to the fire. They were assisted by fire departments from Peoria Heights, Lacon-Sparland, Akron-Princeville, Dunlap, and the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office. Multiple AMT units and Chillicothe Police also responded.
