PEORIA, Ill. – A documentary celebrating 45 years of the St. Jude Memphis to Peoria Run premieres next month.
Co-founder Mike McCoy says the idea came in 1980, at Landmark Fitness, while he and a few others watched people running the track to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
McCoy says their initial plans would have required a lot more running.
“We planned to run from Peoria to Memphis, and back, because Peoria has an affiliate. There’s a connection there, people would do it…until we found out that running there and back was the dumbest idea in the world. So, we decided to drive down there and run back. That’s how it started,” McCoy says.
The film’s producer Mike Rundle says to truly understand the impact the run has had on so many lives, he had to experience it for himself.
“So, myself and a colleague, Lawrence Henderson, went on the run, and lived with them for the four or five days that it took to get back to Peoria…and it was fun.”
Rundle tells WMBD’s “Greg and Dan”, tickets for the premiere of “One Crazy Idea” are available now. There will be two shows on Wednesday, March 11…at 5:00 and 7:30 p.m.
