PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria Police say 2026 has been homicide-free through February, but shootings are increasing.
In its Year-to-Date shooting report released on Monday, police say there have been no homicides so far this year. That’s down from one at this time last year.
Police note there have been 847 shots fired in the year’s first two months, up from 526 shots fired from this time last year, an about 40% increase. The number of ShotSpotter alerts have also increased from 163 this year, compared to 122 through the first two months last year.
Police say there have been seven gunshot victims through February, up from five at the same time last year. Shooting incidents are also up to seven from five.
The number of weapons recovered are slightly down compared to this time last year. Peoria Police says 58 weapons have been recovered so far this year, compared to 64 at this time last year. In the same time frame, 10 stolen weapons were recovered, compared to 12 last year.
