PEORIA, Ill. – Firefighters responded to reports of smoke Friday night at an apartment complex on W. Loire Court in Northwest Peoria.
Crews arrived just after 9 p.m., finding moderate smoke in the entryway of the two-story building.
Battalion Chief Rick Waldron said firefighters found fire trapped in a wall in a second-floor apartment. The fire had extended into a space above the apartment.
Due to the quick action of fire crews, the fire was contained to that area of the complex.
The apartment where the fire started was vacant at the time. A search also confirmed no one was in that section of the complex.
The resident who reported the fire, occupying the apartment below, evacuated safely.
The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes, with crews remaining on the scene for two hours to check for hot spots and to ventilate the building.
An investigation determined the cause of the fire was unintentional and potentially due to a lightning strike reported by several residents earlier in the day.
No injuries were reported. Two people were displaced, with one requiring assistance from the Red Cross.
Total damage is estimated at $250,000.
