PEORIA, Ill. – A Peoria man has been sentenced to nearly a century in prison for the shooting death of his girlfriend last year.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says 46-year-old Derreck Hall was sentenced to 99 years in prison on Friday.
Hall was found guilty in January of First-Degree Murder and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon in the death of 37-year-old Latrista Warfield.
The shooting occurred in January of 2025 at Grove Apartment Complex in North Peoria. It was the first homicide in Peoria in 2025.
Hall confessed to killing Warfield, but argued that she provoked him. The claim was rejected based on evidence showing Warfield was shot multiple times, including twice from behind.
Prosecutors say Hall did not call 911 right away, and only contacted police more than 12 hours later, when he called to turn himself in.
Prosecutors argued for a lengthy prison sentence, describing it as a brutal murder that left a hole in the hearts of Warfield’s family.
Members of Warfield’s family addressed the court at Friday’s sentencing hearing, with her sister speaking of Warfield’s vibrancy and ever-present smile. The sister added that Hall had the chance to say goodbye to his family, but Warfield never had the chance to do so.
