MORTON, Ill. – Midwest Food Bank is mobilizing efforts in Kankakee, Illinois after a destructive tornado and severe storms struck the area on Tuesday night.
The powerful storms left widespread damage across Kankakee County and extended into northwest Indiana.
The storm system produced multiple suspected tornadoes, destructive winds, and unusually large hail, damaging homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure, and leaving thousands without power.
Midwest Food Bank is partnering with regional relief organizations, including the Salvation Army, to provide essential supplies to families and first responders working in the impacted areas.
“We respond to disasters, so families don’t have to face the aftermath alone,” said John Cirilli, Executive Director at Midwest Food Bank in Morton. “Our teams are working alongside trusted partners to quickly move food, water, and essential supplies into the communities that need them most.”
A shipment of critical resources has been prepared for the Kankakee area, which includes:
- 300 food boxes containing essential shelf-stable meals
- 300 hygiene kits with personal care supplies for displaced families
Midwest Food Bank’s relief truck transported the supplies to Elk Grove Village, Illinois, on Thursday, where they will be staged and distributed to impacted communities through regional response partners.
Midwest Food Bank is asking for financial donations to help cover the cost of supplies and fuel, allowing them to quickly and efficiently respond to the victims’ needs.
