PEORIA, Ill. – Multiple referendums across central Illinois were rejected by voters on Tuesday.
Voters in Peoria Heights said no to an advisory question regarding the re-establishment of a 1% grocery tax in the village. 72.6% of voters rejected the proposal.
The tax was voted in last year after Governor J.B. Pritzker eliminated a similar one on the state level. The tax was then vetoed by Mayor Matt Wigginton, before trustees overrode the veto. The issue was then placed as an advisory referendum on Tuesday’s ballot.
Voters in Washington on Tuesday said no to an advisory question regarding the usage of golf carts on city streets, with 65.3% saying no.
A proposal in Mackinaw to increase the tax extension limitation was voted down by nine votes. A firefighter advocacy group stated the proposal would change the tax rate to 15.3% for the 2026 levy year, or about $23 more on a home valued at $100,000. The increase was proposed to meet increased demand.
