PEORIA, Ill. – Despite a partial government shutdown that is affecting the TSA, it’s business as usual at Peoria International Airport.
That’s according to Director of Airports Gene Olson. He tells WMBD’s “The Greg and Dan Show” that the airport continues to be busy, especially this week with spring break going on.
“We’re not seeing any kind of delays because of TSA callouts,” Olson said. “The staff at our airport, extremely dedicated, and we’re not seeing an increase in their level of absenteeism.”
Olson says lines are normal, though a little bit longer because of spring break travelers. But he’s still telling people to arrive two hours before their flight to make sure they have no delays.
Funding for DHS and TSA lapsed last month after Congressional Democrats demanded reforms on immigration enforcement, which caused TSA agents to go unpaid. While he could not go into details, Olson says they are sympathetic to the struggles of agents going unpaid, and will help them any way they can.
Olson also addressed recent reports that smaller airports across the country could have to close due to the shutdown. He doesn’t believe that will happen at PIA because no one is calling out from work, at this time.
