PEORIA, Ill. – A fire at Rhythm Kitchen restaurant on Peoria’s riverfront Friday afternoon caused an estimated $10,000 damage, but quick action by employees and the kitchen’s sprinkler system kept the fire from spreading.
Firefighters were called to the restaurant on SW Water Street just after 4 p.m., finding the kitchen’s sprinkler system activated, which was keeping a fire on the grill under control.
Employees were able to put out the rest of the fire using a fire extinguisher before the fire department arrived.
Crews shut off the gas and power and contained the damage to the griddle and the surrounding vent system.
An investigator and arson dog were called to the scene, determining the fire was accidental.
The restaurant, which was opening for business when the fire occurred, was evacuated, and no injuries were reported.
Rhythm Kitchen will be closed until repairs are completed and the health department inspects the premises due to water damage from the sprinkler system and smoke damage throughout the kitchen.
All other businesses in the building remain open.
