PEORIA, Ill. – It appears that a race too close to call in last week’s primary election has a winner.
Peoria Public Schools Board of Education hopeful Doug Shannon conceded the election Monday night, saying on his campaign’s Facebook page that after reviewing post-Election Day updates and trends, his bid was “close, but likely not enough”.
Shannon says he will not challenge the final totals for the Peoria Public Schools District 3 seat once they are certified.
The first post-Election Day ballots were counted on Thursday, March 19 by the Peoria County Election Commission. At that time, Sarah Howard’s 44-vote lead after Election Night had nearly doubled, with an 86 vote lead over Shannon. Howard had 3117 votes to Shannon’s 3031.
Howard’s vote-by-mail total increased by 100 after last Thursday’s update, while Shannon had 58 more votes. Another update of mail-in ballots is expected on Tuesday.
Shannon reached out to Howard Monday night to congratulate her, and reaffirmed his “genuine offer” from January to meet with her after the election is certified.
He expressed gratitude to his supporters, including his family, friends, volunteers, and the “+49%” of voters who supported his vision.
