PEORIA, Ill. – Another step forward for sainthood of central Illinois native Fulton Sheen has been announced.
Bishop Louis Tylka of the Catholic Diocese of Peoria announced Wednesday that a Mass of Beatification for Sheen will take place on September 24th at 2:00 P.M. He says the Mass will take place at The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis, due to the large number of people wanting to participate.
Tylka says the Mass will be run by Cardinal Luis Tagle, who was nominated as the Papal Representative. He notes that numerous events are planned to take place in Peoria to celebrate the occasion.
“This is a moment of immense grace for the Church—especially for us in the Diocese of Peoria, where Archbishop Sheen was born, ordained, and first served as a priest. His life and ministry continue to inspire countless people to know and love Jesus Christ more deeply,” Tylka said in a statement.
Sheen rose to prominence as a radio and television evangelist, and hosted the TV show “Life is Worth Living.”
The Mass of Beatification is the first major step in the process to declare someone a saint, granting a deceased person the title of “Blessed.” Canonization follows and is the final step before a person is declared a saint, with a verified miracle being part of each step.
