PEKIN, Ill. – An expanded emergency shelter from the Center for Prevention of Abuse is coming to Pekin.
Community leaders broke ground on the new Carol House of Hope, located on South 2nd St., Friday morning. It is set to replace the current shelter that the Center acquired in 2011.
Chief Executive Office Carol Merna says they have outgrown the current location.
“Our two shelters are often at capacity, meaning we’re full. And we never turn people away, if we can help it,” Merna said.
The location on 2nd St. will have 28 beds, compared to 16 at the current shelter. Merna says it will also provide children’s therapy services.
The Center acquired the land for the project in 2024, and Merna says the project overall has been in the works for five years. She says the current timeline is projected to have construction done by Christmastime this year.
Merna says the project will cost an estimated $5 million, with the Center raising more than $2.2 million already for it.
