PEORIA COUNTY, Ill. – Peoria County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of skeletal remains in a wooded area of southwest Peoria late Tuesday afternoon.
Sheriff Chris Watkins said deputies received a call from the area of S. Crest Drive and W. Hill Street around 4:45 p.m., where deputies eventually located the unidentified remains.
The scene was secured, and the remains were turned over to the Peoria County Coroner’s Office for examination and identification.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood says an autopsy, including full-body and dental X-rays, will be conducted on Wednesday, as the coroner tries to determine the cause of death and identification.
Harwood says the unidentified remains found Tuesday have a few discernable features that appear to be unique, and that may lead to identification of the deceased.
The Peoria County Coroner’s Office will be contacting a forensic anthropologist for further examination following Wednesday’s autopsy.
An investigation is ongoing.
