PEORIA, Ill. – Tenants are starting to move into the newest housing complex in South Peoria.
The first tenants have moved into the Churchview Garden Homes complex at Shelley and Antoinette. The complex features 47 units in several buildings, ranging from 1-3 bedrooms apartments to duplexes and townhome units.
Community leaders cut the ribbon on Wednesday morning, the same day the first tenants moved in.
The project is a collaboration between Pivotal Housing Partners and the Peoria Opportunities Foundation.
POF Executive Director Irina Riggenbach says she is grateful and excited to see the project completed after a five year journey. Inception was in 2021, with construction starting last January.
Riggenbach says it helps a need in South Peoria for more affordable housing, and says it’s just the beginning.
“We’re hoping that this project can be a catalyst for future developments like this in this neighborhood,” Riggenbach said.
Pivotal and POF are partnering together to bring senior housing to South Peoria with the MacArthur Senior Flats. Riggenbach is hopeful to begin construction on the project this summer, with completion next year.
Peoria Mayor Rita Ali says the project delivers on one of her promises to bring safe, quality, affordable housing to the city. But she adds that Churchview Gardens can be the start of a revival in South Peoria.
“Once we begin to populate this area, then the grocery stores will return, the pharmacies will return, the retail will return, in order to sustain those types of establishments,” Ali said.
More than 400 applications have been received for Churchview Garden Homes.
