PEORIA, Ill. – National skating champions will be crowned at the Peoria Civic Center this week.
The U.S. Figure Skating Synchronized Skating Championships start Wednesday at the Civic Center, continuing through Saturday.
Discover Peoria President and CEO J.D. Dalfonso says more than 90 teams from across the country will be competing in the event.
Dalfonso says more than 3,000 hotel nights have been booked in the Peoria area related to the championships, which is part of a potential economic boon for the area.
“That’s before they even eat or buy anything when they get into town,” Dalfonso said. “So what we’ve conservatively estimated for the economic impact to be north of $200,000 in direct local taxes.”
Dalfonso says the overall impact could be millions of dollars. He says it also helps give businesses who may still be struggling post-pandemic a needed boost.
“So anytime they have an opportunity to welcome such as group like this into town, it does well for the businesses, and it builds morale for our communities as well,” Dalfonso said.
Single-day and all-event tickets are still available at the Peoria Civic Center box office.
