TAZEWELL COUNTY, Ill. – A big event is starting Thursday in Peoria.
It’s billed as the “world’s largest disc golf tournament” – the Ledgestone Open being played at a number of venues in the area, including Washington Park, Five Points Washington, and Lake Eureka.
Even the tournament’s founder, Nate Heinold, can’t believe how the event has grown in 14 years.
“We have people from Estonia, from Scandinavia, Canada, Japan. We have twelve countries and probably 48 states represented, and 2,257 players this year ,” said Heinold, to WMBD’s Greg and Dan.
Pros and amateurs alike will be playing the courses, Heinold said.
“The best place to watch is going to be Lake Eureka on Thursday or Sunday,” said Heinold. “You can watch the women Friday and Saturday at Sunset Hills. That’s in Pekin. The men will be at Northwood Park in Morton Friday-Saturday, and the women will be at Northwood Park Thursday (and) Sunday.”

Heinold says lest you think disc golf isn’t big money, there’s at least one pro that has a $10 million contract.
