SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A new state law will mean a day on the farm or other learning activities for Illinois students will not affect their attendance record.
Instead of being marked absent for attending events, such as 4-H and FFA, that time will now count towards the school day.
State Representative Sonya Harper (D-Chicago), one of the bill’s sponsors, says it’s important to encourage and nurture those interests in students.
“Now what matters most to me is that Illinois is able to meet our food and trade demands, innovate and grow our farmers where needed, and ensure a steady pipeline of young people entering careers of food and agriculture,” Turner said.
State Senator Tom Bennett (R-Gibson City) was also one of the bill’s sponsors. He called the changes “exciting” for students in the state.
“Students will be able to explore what learning events will have to offer without having to worry about their attendance standing being affected. I believe the best way to learn is though [sic] hands-on experiences, so I am eager for our students,” Bennett said.
Students will still need to make up for any missed assignments while at the work-based learning events.
