UPDATED 6:38 P.M.
PITTSBURGH – An hours-long active shooter situation Wednesday in a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania neighborhood is over.
The standoff ended when authorities shot and killed William Hardison, Sr., 63, who earlier had fired at officers serving him an eviction notice in the city’s Garfield neighborhood, according to WPXI-TV.
WPXI reports Hardison believed he was a “sovereign citizen” – exempt from U.S. laws – and flew a flag that some sovereign citizens flew.
Hardison, according to the TV station, had a history of run-ins with the law, and had been living in a house that previously had been owned by a family member who died, leaving a mortgage in arrears.
The standoff ended about seven hours after it began.
