PEORIA, Ill. – A judge has declared a mistrial in the case of a Peoria man accused of killing his wife almost four years ago.
Peoria County Court records indicate the mistrial was declared Wednesday in the case of Michael Vorrath, 67, charged with First Degree Murder in the late-November, 2019 death of Nancy Vorrath, 60.
Nancy Vorrath was found unresponsive with her head in a utility sink filled with water in her Lexington Court home. Her cause of death was drowning, but Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood at the time also pointed to multiple blunt force injuries.
Michael Vorrath’s defense attorneys claim he tried to save her.
Court documents state the mistrial was declared after a defense witness brought up evidence during testimony that wasn’t allowed to be presented at trial.
A new hearing is scheduled for September 14th. Michael Vorrath remains held in the Peoria County Jail on $1 million bond.
