BOISE, Id. (FOX News) – The former lead singer of the group Smash Mouth has passed away at the age of 56.
FOX News reports Steve Harwell passed away peacefully at his home in Boise, Idaho Monday morning, after he had been suffering through liver failure and placed in hospice care.
Smash Mouth formed in 1994 and was nominated for a Grammy for their 1999 hit “All Star,” which was featured in the soundtrack of the Dreamworks film “Shrek.”
Harwell retired from the band in 2021 after an incident during a performance in upstate New York where he appeared to be intoxicated and threatened fans.
On X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter, the band posted a tribute, calling Harwell “a true American original.” The post continued to say Harwell would be remembered for his focus and determination to reach pop stardom.
A representative for Harwell is asking for people to respect Steve and his family’s privacy “during this difficult time.”
