School is back in session in the Peoria area. If not now, by next week.
Sgt. Tony Halsey, with Illinois State Police, says it is against the law to pass a school bus stopped with lights flashing and its sign out.
“If it’s a two-lane road, they must stop both ways. If it’s a four-lane road or more, two lanes in each direction, then just the direction that the bus is going,” Halsey said.
Halsey reminds drivers to slow down in school zones as kids head back to class. He says school zone speed limits are in effect while school is in session, not just when students are visible.
“Although they may not be out on the playground or outside, if it’s during school hours, then the posted speed limit is what it is for the school zone.”
Halsey says drivers should be especially alert for kids in crosswalks and near school buildings the first few days of class.
“We ask you to watch out for the crossing guards. We also ask that you not be on your cell phone during that time. Pay attention. It’s going to be very congested the first few days of school,” Halsey said.
Halsey says new student drivers also need to stay off phones as they drive to and from school, and to always buckle up.
