PEORIA, Ill. – Taft Homes in Peoria is beginning to officially be no more.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday at Taft. The homes there are being demolished and construction will soon begin on 142 new affordable housing units that will be known as Providence Pointe.
Peoria Housing Authority Board chairman Carl Cannon tells news partner 25 News Taft Homes just aren’t ideal anymore, given all the complaints about conditions and crime.
“We’ve had some complaints about Taft and some of our other properties, and they’re right,” said Cannon. “We’re going to try to Band-Aid what we have, but what’s exciting is we won’t need Band-Aids any more in the near future.”
Construction — $50 million worth financed by state, federal, and local funds — is expected to be complete sometime in 2023.
Officials say current Taft Homes residents will be first on the list to pick out new apartments.
