PEORIA, Ill. – There are plenty of businesses and community organizations that have provided support to families affected by Peoria’s increase in violence, even though it may be getting more and more tough for them to do so.
Sharee Tucker-Lockett of T.W. Parks Colonial Chapel on the city’s south side tells our news partner 25 News she feels for the families of the victims of the city’s 24 fatal shootings.
“Sometimes you have no words for them,” said Tucker-Lockett. “All you want to do is hug them and comfort them. But you still have to know that you have to take care of the family as best as you can in that time.”
Reverend Linda Butler tells 25 News providing a family who’s lost a loved one long-term assistance and support is crucial.
“Being there at least 60 days after that death, to walk with that family and help them process what has happened,” said Butler. “And be available for any of their emotional, spiritual and social needs.”
Other organizations have lent a hand as well in the aftermath of recent incidents. One — the South Side Mission — say they’re fearful for young people who just want to stay out of trouble and be in a safe place.
