The City of East Peoria will hold a public forum on potential regulation of recreational marijuana and businesses that would sell it next week.
The forum will occur during a city council working session at 5 p.m. Tuesday, August 20 in the Civic Complex at 401 W. Washington Street.
The public will be able to comment and ask questions at the end of the work session. There will be no action taken by the council during the work session.
The working session will be followed by the city council’s regularly scheduled meeting at 6 p.m.
State of Illinois law legalizing the use and sale of recreational marijuana provides municipalities the ability to set their own regulations regarding recreational marijuana including zoning, location and number of businesses that will be allowed and sales tax rates.
Earlier this year, the Morton Village Board banned the sale of marijuana, and El Paso passed its own ordinance prohibiting the sale of recreational marijuana and businesses that would sell it.
