CHICAGO, Ill. – Governor JB Pritzker has signed lesiglation that would help local communities statewide possibly get to the root of the gun violence plaguing them.
The governor signed what was described as a follow-up to the Reimagine Public Safety Act which, among other things, will provide funding to communities to help evidence-based violence prevention services.
“We must keep it simple, even if the problem is complex,” said State Sen. Robert Peters (D-Chicago). “We must interrupt at the point of anti-social and nihilistic behavior, work to treat the trauma that is leading to this behavior.”
The measure helps the newly-created Illinois Office of Firearm Prevention provide that grant funding.
“We are showing these communities that we are listening, and we stand with them,” said Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton. “Because they know what they need to move forward, and they have long fought to change those conditions.”
Community advisory groups will be formed across the state to come up with solutions which should lower firearm injuries and death
