CHILLICOTHE, Ill. — Plans for a new barge mooring project near Chillicothe’s downtown waterfront — are dashed — at least for now.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says developers of the controversial Holiday Harbor, Inc. barge fleeting project did not submit “required data relevant to the permit application”.
The Corps was thus, unable to properly evaluate the project for final approval.
Officials say the application for the project has now been withdrawn and it is no longer active.
Richard Hamm and Holiday Harbor, Inc. had intended to bring the barge fleeting project as a way of generating more revenue for the harbor business and thus adding to the local tax base.
However, many local stake holders in Chillicothe opposed the development, claiming it would ultimately hurt the local economy, in part, by becoming an eye-sore.
Those opponents went as far as to launch a concerted ad campaign to raise awareness to their cause.
It’s still unclear if Holiday Harbor intends to try again on the proposed barge project.
Reaction from the group opposed to the project is below.
