PEORIA, Ill. – Firefighters were called to a home on Spring Street in Peoria late Tuesday night on a working fire.
Fire Battalion Chief Scott Strum said his crews arrived around 10:48 p.m., finding heavy fire and black smoke coming from the front of the one-story duplex.
Rescue personnel searched both sides of the home for residents. Eight pets, three cats and five guinea pigs, died in the fire. A dog and cat were rescued and are expected to be ok.
A fire investigator determined the cause of the fire was accidental.
Two adults were displaced and requested assistance from the Red Cross.
One person was taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation and minor burns. No firefighters were injured.
The home was boarded up. Damage was estimated at $50,000.
