PEORIA, Ill. – It appears a winter storm headed for the Peoria area this weekend won’t bring as much snow as first thought.
25 News First Alert Meteorologist Chuck Collins says we’ll see snow early Friday morning, resulting in a couple of inches of accumulation.
“The snow will mix with or change to rain for a few hours mid-morning, then change back to wind driven snow by the afternoon and evening hours, bringing another few inches of snow,” Collins says.
Bitterly cold air will come in behind the snow with single digit highs, and lows below zero by Sunday.
The National Weather Service in Lincoln has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Central Illinois from 12 a.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Saturday.
The city of Peoria is preparing for the forecasted bitter cold next week by announcing warming centers. The lobby of the Peoria Police Department on SW Adams St. will be open as a warming center from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Monday through Friday. All Peoria Fire Department locations will also serve as warming centers from 7:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. each day.
The Heart of Illinois United Way 211 service is also available for people who need assistance in the cold weather.
PEORIA, Ill. – As central Illinois digs out from the first winter storm of 2024, the next round is only a couple days away.
25 News First Alert Meteorologist Chuck Collins says snowfall will start early Friday morning and continue into Saturday morning, with some rain mixed in at times.
Previous projections had snowfall at around 8” in the Peoria area, but Collins says the heavy snow line appears to be moving north. He says Peoria will still receive around 4” of snowfall, with heavier amounts north.
Once the snow ends, bitter cold temperatures will blanket central Illinois. Collins says single digits high temperatures will move into the area on Sunday, with lows below zero. The National Weather Service Central Illinois office in Lincoln is forecasting wind chills to be -10 to -25.
