BATAVIA, Ill. – You won’t be able to buy a plastic bag from Aldi anymore, if you forget to bring your own bags.
ALDI says it met its goal of eliminating plastic shopping bags from all its stores by the end of 2023.
It’s part of a number of sustainability initiatives the grocery chain has undertaken.
The company claims the move will prevent more than nine million pounds of plastic from being brought into use every year.
ALDI also says it’s in the process of transferring coolers at all its stores to the use of natural refrigeration, which will be complete by 2035.
“Eliminating plastic shopping bags from our stores and transitioning to environmentally friendly refrigerant systems not only help us protect the environment, but they also help reduce costs which we then pass on to our customers,” said Jason Hart, CEO, ALDI, in a news release. “These decisions help our customers feel good about shopping at ALDI and our employees feel proud to work here.”
600 of ALDI’s stores nationwide have already made the refrigeration change.
