UPDATED 7:02 a.m. (2/17)
PEORIA, Ill. — Public works crews in Peoria have been preparing for a winter storm area that’s expected to bring rain, freezing rain, snow and plunging temperatures over the next few days.
A city-wide parking ban went into effect Wednesday night and will continue through 6 p.m. Saturday.
Peoria has also issued an emergency declaration, banning parking on city streets, allowing plows and emergency vehicles full access.
“It’s going to be a difficult challenge, obviously, with the rain and everything else,” also referencing forecast single-digit temperatures Thursday night into Friday.
Peoria residents are urged to move their cars to driveways or other parking locations off the street. Residents should not park in alleys.
Cars parked on city streets may be subject to towing or a minimum of a $50 ticket.
Alternative Parking Locations in Peoria:
Residents may move their cars to any of the following locations during the parking ban:
Twin Towers Parking Garage, 123 SW Jefferson Street.
Niagara Deck, 109 W. Adams Street.
Jefferson Deck, 236 SW Jefferson Street.
There will be no charge to residents using the decks, but those using the parking decks will need to take the ticket for access.
The parking decks will be available from 4 p.m. Wednesday through 6 p.m. Saturday.
“If you don’t need to go out over the next 24 hours…Thursday from about five in the morning until about five in the evening, is when we’re going to see the worst part of this storm,” said Urich. “That’s just something we ask that people be mindful of that.”
Suburban Peoria communities including Pekin, East Peoria and Washington have also announced their own on-street parking bans.
Like the ban in Peoria, Pekin will begin to prohibit street parking at 10 p.m., but will continue its ban “until further notice.” Washington’s parking ban takes effect at 8 a.m. Thursday and will remain in effect for 48 hours or until conditions dictate otherwise.
Police in East Peoria say that city’s street parking ban will begin at 5 a.m. Thursday and continue until 5 a.m. Saturday.
